Ejulve – Villarluengo – Gorge of Benatanduz
“You wonder why reason, in a while,
this earth had able men
to go ahead opportunely.”
In the Sale of Guinea fowl we turned aside ourselves to reach Ejulve, town pertaining to the Region of Andorra-Mountain range of Arcs, in which it emphasizes its defensive, back-to-back to the church of Santa Maria Major and constructed tower before this one by the Order of the Calatrava in centuries XIV-XV.
Once we left Ejulve we followed towards Villarluengo, leaving in the other direction the route of Aliaga and Jorcas that José Antonio knew so well and who as much sadness produced to him, because the abandonment of the old thermal power plant forced to him to become questions of difficult answer.
In the way between Ejulve and Villarluengo is the starting point of the Space of Interpretation of the Territory Masías de Ejulve. A network of old footpaths crosses a territory of great natural and landscaping interest, very journeyed by those who they want to know the way life of the old masoveros, that moved away of the towns, lodged in stable residential nuclei to operate the surrounding territory. At the time of more economic power, thanks mainly to the wool cattle ranch, were constructed fortified towers that are now those that forms the landscape of the Masías de Ejulve.
We return to be with waters of the Guadalope river, already in the Region of the Maestrazgo. A highway to the right takes us to the bottom of a closed valley where the town of Montoro is located, that “raises its argillaceous houses against the calcareous stone of its later strong wall”. Back from the main line we occur of you brush with the Natural Monument of the Organs of Montoro. José Antonio says to us that we are before “geologic spectacle… a magnificent work done by the erosion of the water on the rock, showing the sky without petrified number of formation, as majestic organ pipes”.
And with that image we will arrive at “the factories” of Villarluengo. He was this “one of those towns of the Maestrazgo that, in a while of history, had a great economic splendor”. In Villarluengo a factory of paper in century XVII rose taking advantage of the force waters of the Guadalope, and until paper money made. One became weave factory and at the end of century XVIII it got to have up to 24 looms. Nowadays, already disuse, the old factories have become an inn, call of the Trouts, and in a fish farm.
From this point, a deflection allows us to reach in a few kilometers the small locality of Pitarque, starting point of one of the visited places more of the region, the birth of the Pitarque river, known as the “Eye of the source”.
Back from the route the highway raises and we arrived finally at Villarluengo we went to the place of the City council of which José Antonio says to us who remembers to him “to those gorgeous places” of the great towns of Latin America” and praises its breads macaroons. It excels in the urban landscape the neoclassical church of Asuncion.
When leaving Villarluengo we entered ourselves in the very long port of Fourth Bare one, of changeable landscapes, that lead to us until Gorge of Benatanduz, the highest locality of the turolense Maestrazgo. It is worth the trouble to pause before the set that forms the Hospital of the Poor men and the City council, with their market pawl, both of century XVI, and the church of Asuncion, of baroque factory of century XVIII.
