Arén, Montañana and Benabarre
“Villa of intrincate streets… and whose streets I crossed with the necessary privacy that their arcs and corners solicit”
We leave the monastery of Alaón back and we went towards Arén. They accompany the words to us by Labordeta: “The landscape becomes heated, by red the most alive one of clays. He is frightening and before arriving at the town deserts to see the panorama, that it is beautiful and exciting”.
The locality of Arén, or Areny in Catalan, is located next to the precipice of Sobrecastell. We pause in this medieval town to cross the streets, arcs and tunnels of its old quarters. We visit its porticada Greater Place and the baroque church of San Martin of the s. XVIII, in the Place of the Church. The cover of this parochial one remembers the existence to us of previous a Renaissance church. In a rocky escarpment on the town the rest of the medieval castle of Arén, and a later Romance church of the s rest. XI. The space that occupied these constructions was first place of interment. Thus the 140 tombs of the two superposed necropolises testify it between which we walked. In the oldest tombs they appear excavated on the rock, whereas in the second, also medieval but in a level superior, they were used lajas of stone for his construction.
Arén owns an extraordinary paleontological patrimony with deposits of ichnites and fossil bones of dinosaurs. In the Museum of the Dinosaurs, located in the old building of the city council, the oldest crocodile of Europe exposes itself.
About 12 kilometers of Arén we visited Montañana, in the confluence of the precipices of San Miguel and San Juan. To cross it is to make a trip in the time. Montañana is divided in two districts that a bridge of two eyes of the s unites. XVI. In the high part it was constructed in the s. XI the fortified enclosure. Still on they are the rest of the defensive tower or tower of Mora. Next to her the Romance church of Our Señora de Baldós is raised, of the s. XII. To average slope, and visible from any point, the Tower of the Jail rises, that comprised of the walled enclosure of the s. XV and XVI, and the means arc point that served as access. Outside the urban area we approached by a brief way until the Romance hermitage of San Juan, constructed in the s. XIII, of unique ship and semicircular head to which it is acceded by a door of double archivolt. In the interior paintings are conserved murals of end of the s. XV.
Back from the highway, and after leaving the Bridge of Montañana back, the highway takes to us until the municipality of Viacamp, presided over by a tower of the s. XI that offers some magnificent panoramic. In this locality the Center of Visitors of the Montsec de L'Estall invites to us to know the Natural Way Montfalcó.
Our next stop is Hopper. Shortly before arriving, it is possible to accede by a track to the Tower of Falces, sent to construct in the 1062. We lead until Benabarre, last point of the route. Labordeta says to us that Benabarre is a “town of intrincate streets… been born on the feet from its castle”. In the patio of the schools José Antonio “in days sang in which the clear things did not walk nothing and whose streets I crossed with the necessary privacy that their arcs and corners solicit”.
Necropolis of Arén
In rocky escarpment on Arén, 140 tombs in two superposed necropolises form this funeral set. In the oldest tombs they appear excavated on the rock, whereas in the second, also medieval but in a level superior, they were used lajas of stone for his construction. In the lifted zone more we perfectly found identifiable infantile tombs by the size.
Our Señora de Baldós de Montañana
Construction of the s. XII of cross plant Latin of a single ship and finished off by a semicircular apse. Its tower bell tower is of gothic style of the s. XV. In its interior a choir in high load on a reduced arc and maintains to the floor a wood caissoned ceiling. The fore door is the most showy element of the temple, formed by six means archivolts point, trasdós recorded with ends of diamond and an eardrum carved with the figure of Christ in Majesty.
